Your Help is Needed!

During the past five years, Democracy for Monroe County has been hard at work promoting policies that will bring us a strong community, broad prosperity, effective government, education for all, and a better future. Through our activism, discussions of important issues at our monthly meetings, and our on-going training programs, we have supported and promoted the mutual goals of the Democratic Party, Organized Labor, and other progressive organizations by reaching out to the ordinary citizens of our community and recruiting them to become active in the important issues of our time.

Currently, we are focusing on the health care legislation that is moving through Congress. We strongly believe that the heart of the final bill must be a robust Public Option that will

• be ready on day one;
• be national, available everywhere, and accountable to our government; and
• have the clout to establish rates with providers and big drug companies.

As part of our push for the Public Option, we are organizing a Walk and Rally for Health Care Reform that will take place on September 12, 2009. This event, which will start at 4:00 PM on the B-Line Trail next to the Convention Center, and end with a rally on the steps of City Hall, will have a diverse program of speakers including State Representative Matt Pierce, Bloomington City Clerk and Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Regina Moore, and others. We hope to see you there.

In order to organize an event such as this, however, and to continue afterwards to bring our message of activism to people throughout Monroe County, we have a perpetual need for financial support. Obtaining a permit for us to hold our health care event cost us $100 alone. Additionally, flyers, posters, informational mailings, materials for training sessions, training scholarships for our members, and general support of socially progressive and fiscally responsible candidates are just a few examples of the expenses we incur as an organization.
